STOP SEX TRAFFICKING OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Millions of children are being trafficked every year. Many of them are suffered from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse. In fact, sex trafficking and sex exploitation for commercial use of children and young people happen everywhere. According to the United Nations, human trafficking is the third biggest crime (UNFPA 2006) and the world’s fastest growing crime industry (UNGIFT 2008), with 80% purpose of commercial sex exploitation. About 1,2 millions children are being the victims of trafficking every year with different purposes. Other source shows about 1,8 millions children have became the victim of the world’s sex trafficking slavery every year.
Although the numbers are surely alarming, the problem of sex trafficking of children has not got any serious attention from the government, media, company and even the public. The awareness and knowledge of this issue is still low and most people think that nothing can be done. Hence, this problem needs serious handling!
Human trafficking is happening in every continent, region, and country in the world, from poor country to rich country (UNICEF, UK. 2003). In fact, cases of human trafficking are much bigger now than ever noted before because many cases are not being reported nor detected.
Before she passed away, Anita Roddick had paid big attention to human trafficking and she was sure that The Body Shop will actively involved to stop trafficking of children. The campaign which related to human rights will be carried out through collaboration with ECPAT International (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes). The purpose of this campaign is to insist the government to stop sex trafficking of children and young people seriously.
What We Do to Support the Campaign?
Starting 2009, The Body Shop proclaimed the campaign of Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People around the world. This campaign is purposing to inspire long term transformation and creating a world that takes real action to fight sex trafficking of children. And we are increasing the awareness through our stores and media.
We are making sure that your voice is heard by the authorities to bring transformation to protect children and young people around the world.
We want to use the fund raised to sponsor the prevention programs, increasing awareness in susceptible neighborhood where children and young people become the target, and give help for those who have became a victim.
Do Your Part to Participate
As a support, you can buy our New! Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream 75 ml in all our stores. The profit from the product will be donated to ECPAT to fight sex trafficking of children and young people in Indonesia.
In 2010, we are willing to ask you to raise your hands to give support and hand sign on our online petition as well as in our stores. Together we can ask the decision-makers to get involved in protecting the children and young people from sex trafficking.
